Bir kış günü lapa lapa kar yağarken bir kraliçe abanoz çerçeveli penceresinin önüne oturmuş dikiş dikiyordu. Öylece otururken ve de karları seyrederken dikiş iğnesi eline batıverdi; üç damla kan kar üzerine damladı. Karın beyazlığı, kanın kırmızısı ve abanoz ağacının siyahı bir araya gelince o kadar güzel göründü ki, kraliçe "Keşke kar gibi beyaz tenli, kan gibi kırmızı yanaklı ve abanoz kadar siyah saçlı bir çocuğum olsa" diye aklından geçirdi.
Çok geçmeden bir kız dünyaya geldi; çocuk kar gibi beyaz tenli, kan gibi kırmızı yanaklı ve abanoz kadar siyah saçlıydı; bu yüzden ona Pamuk Prenses adı takıldı.
